THE URBUILD CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM - Why Urbuild is architecturally smart for DIY construction

Urbuild is architecturally smart because it combines a modular, biobased, and flexible building system with maximum choice in the degree of prefab and personal input. This makes sustainable building simpler, more affordable, and accessible for self-builders and housing collectives.

PLATFORM CONSTRUCTION AS A BASE

platform construction simple.png HSB platform construction forms the basis. This allows for building with light prefab elements, even without heavy equipment, and the construction parts can be easily divided into small, manageable sections. Suitable for both professional builders and DIY builders.

Within this, Urbuild offers a limited but thoughtful palette of standard wall types that are all vapor-permeable and all biobased. This gives projects the freedom to choose between speed, affordability, and personal input.

CHOICE OF 3 BASIC WALL TYPES

wall options title below.png

  1. Full-fledged HSB elements filled with wood wool. On-site assembled with the help of 2D or 3D elements. Opportunities include:
  • Full-service delivery of your home.
  • DIY finishing: realize your facade, interior finishing, installations, and/or interior after the shell is water- and wind-tight.
  • Or total self-build where we provide building plans and all materials.
  1. Hollow HSB wall, roof, and floor elements that can be easily finished from the inside. These elements are available as flatpack. With the option of:
  • Construction by one of our builders, followed by you personally applying the facade, interior finishing, installations, and/or interior, as well as the insulation and interior plating.
  • Or going even further: delivery as a flatpack, allowing you to quickly set up the shell yourself and finish it waterproof.
  1. DIY straw building elements: low material costs and extremely high insulation values with low additional costs, ideal for radically ecological DIY building.

Each project can be adjusted in terms of how far prefab goes, at what finishing level it is delivered, and how much self-building is utilized. This makes the system socially and economically smart: more personal input = lower costs, without technical risks. Different preferences and circumstances (location, distance, logistics) are no problem but part of the system. And practice has shown: this freedom to choose the right prefabrication strategy per project and per partner can be a true "cost hack."

CUSTOM FINISHING OPTIONS

All wall types can then be finished in different ways on the inside and outside. On the inside, finishing with 3S wall panels, clay plaster, or gypsum is possible. On the outside, we recommend standard finishing with (horizontal or vertical) boards, but (clay) plasterwork is sometimes also an option.

For roof finishing, we offer an option to work with green roofs, second-hand tiles, or (recycled) steel roof plates. Complex specialist details at the joints are avoided. In fact: the connections are designed for maximum comfort for the DIY builder.

A practical library of windows and doors provides exactly the right amount of options for practical choices and playful window arrangements. In the case of DIY construction, we encourage the use of second-hand window frames. Freely adjustable eaves offer the possibility of shading in the right places, as well as advantages for DIY (finishing) work, allowing for dry work even if your house is not fully finished.

In addition, the walls are designed so that it is easy to add installations to the shell later. So you can do this yourself or have it done by a local partner in-house.

SIMPLE, PRACTICAL, FLEXIBLE & ECOLOGICAL

All in all, the URBUILD construction system thus provides exactly the right degree of flexibility, so that you do not have to get bogged down in choice stress.

With smart automation, Urbuild makes sustainable building accessible and affordable, while integrated cost calculations provide direct control over the budget. We then offer multiple construction scenarios—from fully DIY to full-service—backed by consortium expertise and plenty of room for personal choices.
